Our core curriculum incorporates the elements we consider to be the essential building blocks of independence, personal happiness and good citizenship. Reading and writing are two of these essentials. Our learning program ensures that each child learns to write, developing the capacity to express their thoughts and feelings with ease. The same program ensures that they become readers, and we make sure that they are continually exposed to the very best literature.
In the teaching of math, we use manipulative equipment to illustrate problems and their solutions, and we encourage children explore their own individual avenues of problem-solving. Repetition of basic facts ensures a solid groundwork for future success.
Science, as a tool for understanding the world we live in, receives particular attention, as does environmental awareness with an emphasis on exploring and protecting our local environment. Both subjects are integrated within the fabric of our students' learning experience in a variety of ways:
Kindergarten through grade 8 students have art classes once a week, with a second art class provided as a choice on Fridays.
Field trips to performances at the Mount Baker Theatre, music classes with guest instructors, and school performances provide students with experiences of music and drama.
All our students from preschool through middle school have Spanish classes three times per week, allowing them to become intimate to some degree with that language and culture. Global awareness and diversity are also highlighted within our school curriculum in many ways, from science topics to reading materials to classroom projects and holiday celebrations.
